Celebrated Every July 15th – Because Their Safety Matters Too
At Oakes, Edgeley & Ellendale Veterinary Services, we know your pets are more than animals—they’re family. And just like you’d prepare a fire safety plan for your children, including your furry companions is just as important.
That’s what National Pet Fire Safety Day is all about: raising awareness and helping pet owners prevent and prepare for fires, because emergencies can happen anytime.
🐾 Fire Facts That Hit Home:
An estimated 1,000 house fires are accidentally started by pets every year.
Sadly, 500,000 pets are affected by house fires annually, many due to smoke inhalation.
The good news? Preparation can save lives.
🔥 Pet Fire Safety Tips from Your Local Vet Team:

1. Secure Open Flames:
Never leave candles, fireplaces, or stovetops unattended—especially around curious paws or wagging tails.
2. Avoid Stove Knob Accidents:
Stove knobs are a common way pets start fires. Consider knob covers or removing knobs when not in use.
3. Pet-Proof Electrical Cords:
Chewed cords are a fire hazard. Use cord protectors and train pets to avoid chewing.
4. Place Pet Alert Window Clings:
Let first responders know how many pets are inside. Keep it updated—ask us for a free one at your next visit!
5. Keep Leashes and Carriers Ready:
If you must evacuate quickly, having carriers and leashes near exits can save precious time.
6. Know Where Your Pets Like to Hide:
In case of smoke or danger, it’s helpful to know their safe spots so you can find them quickly.
🐶 Fire Safety Isn't Just for Indoors
In rural North Dakota, outdoor hazards are also a risk, especially with dry grass and open flames. If you have working dogs or pets on farms, secure kennels away from brush, keep water sources nearby, and never leave them confined near fire-prone areas.
